Microsoft is planning to take on its rivals by offering a new update for its Edge browser. A new tool will help Microsoft Edge to become one of the most efficient browsers available to users. The tech giant is testing a new update for the Sleeping Tabs tool on the Microsoft Edge browser that promises to save huge amounts of RAM. Microsoft has posted a tweet from its official Edge Dev account that reveals the browser’s Sleeping Tabs tool is capable of saving 273 petabytes of RAM in just 28 days.
What is Microsoft Edge’s Sleeping Tabs tool
The company introduced the Sleeping Tabs tool for its Edge browser in 2020. In 2021, the tool received an important update that allowed Edge users to opt for tabs to fall asleep after just a minute of inactivity. Initially, the tool started saving resources after two hours of inactivity, the update reduced the time to 60 seconds.
How will it work
The Edge browser will put tabs to sleep when users haven’t used them for a while, and then wake them as soon as they are clicked.
How will it help users
Microsoft claims, on average, that this feature helps in cutting down memory usage by 85%. The tech giant even claims that Sleeping Tabs will reduce the browser’s CPU usage by almost 99%.
The company will even allow users to check the specific amount of memory saved by the tool. Users will be able to find this information in the Performance section of the “Settings and more” option.
Can it help Microsoft get more users
The tech giant hopes that this tool will help bring users back to Microsoft Edge after the numbers have been stagnant over the recent months. A Statcounter report suggested that Microsoft Edge has “either lost or failed to gain market share” in the last few months.
The report also mentioned that Edge claims a 3.99% share of the market (across both desktop and mobile platforms) which estimates nearly 200 million users. On the other hand, Google Chrome dominates 64.95% of the market and Apple’s Safari has 19.01% of the users. However, Edge has a slightly bigger share than Mozilla Firefox which is at 3.26%.
