Record players evoke an enormous amount of nostalgia and the purists always felt that music never sounded better than on the vinyl records. The record player fell prey to technology and became a conversational piece more than anything. Ikea, however, wants to resurrect the record player and give it a modern twist.
According to a product note shared by Ikea, the company will launch a new record player later this year. The record player — developed in collaboration with the house band Swedish House Mafia — features a square and circle design. “The square and the circle together, the chunkiness of the whole piece – it gives just the statement that we wanted for the record player,” said Ikea engineer Friso Wiersma.
Ikea says that it has a “solid overall construction bound to absorb any vibrations”. There’s a built-in pre-amplifier and will support USB. There is a replaceable cartridge and the needle — a critical part of the record player — is of good quality as well, says Ikea. The OBEGRÄNSAD record player is powered by a USB cable and can be connected to standard wired speakers – or more advanced sound systems with an adapter.
The record player is a part of the OBEGRÄNSAD collection that will launch later this year.
Ikea had earlier planned to launch a record player in 2018 but it never saw the light of the day. Ikea has a line of speakers in collaboration with audio brands like Sonos. It’s not clear how much the record player will cost and in what regions will it be made available.
